There are no services there, but just after you leave the interstate, there is a Sinclair Fuel Center and a C-store selling touristy things, drinks and sandwiches. Depart Salt Lake City and drive to Bonneville Salt Flats 90 minute drive. It's free to visit during the non-season. The salt flats began to form as precipitation decreased with a changing climate and the water in Lake Bonneville began to evaporate and recede. You can put Bonneville Salt Flats into your GPS app and it will take you to the rest stop, it’s pretty hard to miss. Prepare for a 1.5-2 hour drive if you are coming from Salt Lake or Provo. The crust is thinning, but it's still thickest in the center and less than one inch toward the edges. The Bonneville Salt Flats are located about 122 miles from Salt Lake and 20 miles from the Nevada border at Wendover. The Flats are 12 miles long and roughly 5 miles wide. Today it's used to set land speed records during the racing season in August. It's the remnants of the prehistoric Lake Bonneville, which also formed the Great Salt Lake. To learn about this very interesting place was fascinating to me.
